Hello! My name is Lauren Williams. Welcome to my children’s book blog, Beloved Bookshelf.
My deep love of literature began at Hillsdale College, where I met professors and students who treated books not as something to be used or delighted in merely, but as the gift and treasure they are to our human flourishing. I ended up majoring in English, soaking up every class I could on the literary classics.
When I became a mother, I couldn’t wait to start reading to my daughter. I quickly became overwhelmed, however, by the rows and rows of children’s books at the library. I knew I needed to arm myself with a good booklist, but I had no idea where to begin.
Soon after a friend recommended John Senior’s nursery booklist to me. I chose Winnie-the-Pooh by A.A. Milne and the Beatrix Potter tales from Senior’s list and began reading them to my eldest daughter. Seeing the delight in her eyes, hearing the questions she began asking, and observing how her imagination grew was exciting . . . and motivating. I began spending hours searching for other resources and combing booklists, determined to find the best children’s literature I could.
Other parents expressed their interest in the titles I was finding and the seed for this blog was planted. I began to review hundreds of books so that I could create the lists now available on Beloved Bookshelf. They are far from finished, but I hope they can bridge the gap for other parents and educators searching for quality literature.
There are many wonderful children’s books available. My children and I enjoy daily more books than what these lists contain. That being said, on Beloved Bookshelf I share books that best reflect the following criteria:
Books that . . . are delightful; awaken imagination, encourage curiosity, and cultivate wonder; have artful illustrations and memorable characters; train a child’s ear to good use of language through poetic prose or rhyme; form character and instill a love for virtue; and prepare a child to read the Great Books.
Please say hello!
